Species Information

General:
Perennial herb from slender rhizomes; stems erect, 15-30 cm tall, leafless or with membranous bracts, smooth or sparsely brown-soft-hairy below, densely fine-glandular-hairy above.
Leaves:
Basal leaves more or less round, 3-8 cm wide, shallowly 7- to 11-lobed, round-toothed, bases slightly kidney-shaped, smooth to whitish- or brownish-hairy; long-stalked; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a 20- to 60-flowered spike-like cluster, blossoming upward, flower stalks 1-2.5 mm long; petals greenish-yellow, the claw slender, the blades dissected into 5 to 9 linear, mostly opposite segments; calyces saucer-shaped, 3-3.5 mm wide, joined to ovary for part of length; free hypanthium thinly gland-lined, somewhat spreading, about length of lobes; calyx lobes 5, triangular; stamens 5, opposite the calyx lobes.
Fruits:
Capsules; seeds black, veiny-pitted.

Habitat and Range

Moist to mesic meadows, streambanks and forests in the montane and subalpine zones; locally frequent in S BC north to 53degreeN; E to AB and S to MT, ID, NV and CA.
